What Are Independent Living Skills?
Independent living skills are the everyday competencies a person needs to run their own life. They cover the practical, like laundry, budgeting, and cooking, along with the internal, like managing time, regulating emotions, and communicating clearly. Together, these skills let a young person handle responsibilities, solve problems, and care for themselves without a parent managing every step.
For teens, these skills develop gradually through the adolescent years and become essential at the transition to adulthood. Teens who build them early gain confidence and resilience. Teens who miss them often struggle with the jump to college, work, and independent life, especially when mental health challenges are part of the picture.
