Your Teen Doesn't Lose a School Year While They're Getting Better

Your teen walks into Horizon, sits down with a real certified teacher in a real accredited school, and keeps moving. When they leave, whether that's two months from now or seven, their transcript shows a Cognia-accredited school. Real credits, real grades.

For an older teen, that means college plans stay intact. For a teen who was failing or refusing school before they came in, it usually means something simpler and just as important: they remember they're a student. That identity doesn't collapse during treatment.

At Horizon Recovery, we offer an Educational Program that ensures your teen receives an exceptional education while tending to their mental health.

What the Education Program Actually Is

Horizon partners with Advantages School International (ASI), a fully accredited K–12 online private school that has been operating since 2007. ASI is accredited by Cognia, the largest accrediting organization in the country. Their diplomas are NCAA-approved and accepted by U.S. colleges and universities nationally.

core subjects, AP, Honors, foreign language, ESL, and credit recovery

Their catalog includes more than 400 courses: core subjects, AP, Honors, foreign language, ESL, and credit recovery. Whether your teen is ahead, behind, or somewhere in the middle, the curriculum meets them where they are.

At every Horizon location, the academic block is led by a dedicated Arizona-certified education professional, with at least one additional staff member assisting in the room. We provide the laptop your teen uses during academics. If your teen has a school-issued laptop they already use, we can talk through whether that works based on their level of care.

How This Is Different From What You've Heard Elsewhere

If you've already called other programs about school, you've likely noticed the answers stay vague.

"We have a teacher."

"We work with the home district."

"We have a school program."

When you press for specifics (accreditation, credit issuance, who's actually in the room), the details tend to thin out.

That vagueness is common because the programs behind those answers vary widely.

Most fall into one of three patterns:

  1. A study hall with an aide: Your teen does whatever their home school sends. No accreditation. No credits issued by the program.
  2. A teacher on staff who tutors: Better, but no accredited school behind it. Whether your teen earns credit is at the home school's discretion.
  3. An internal program the facility runs: Accreditation varies. So does whether colleges accept the transcript.

Horizon offers:

  • A Cognia-accredited K–12 school partner with NCAA-approved transcripts accepted by colleges nationally.
  • A dedicated Arizona-certified education professional leading every academic block at every location, with at least one additional staff member in the room.
  • Tuition paid continuously across residential, PHP, and IOP. A school that stays enrolled with your teen when they step down.

What You Do Not Have to Do

This is the part most parents don't realize until we walk them through it.

  • You do not have to find an accredited school that will work during treatment.
  • You do not pay the tuition. Horizon covers it all the way through residential, PHP, and IOP.
  • You do not hire a credentialed teacher.
  • You do not hire a tutor.
  • You do not buy or supply a laptop. Horizon provides the equipment.
  • You do not schedule academics around clinical sessions.
  • You do not fight your teen every morning to do schoolwork on top of everything else they're working through.
  • You do not track credits or worry about transcripts.
  • You do not negotiate leave and re-entry with the home district.

On the day your teen steps down, you do not start over with a brand-new school enrollment. ASI stays with them. Most parents we meet are running on empty by the time they call us. We absorb the academic logistics so you can use your energy on your kid.

Continuous Education Across All Levels of Care

Your teen's enrollment in ASI begins at intake and continues uninterrupted through residential, PHP, and IOP. This means roughly five to seven months of unbroken, accredited schooling.

Horizon pays the tuition the entire time.

When your teen steps down to outpatient, the enrollment continues with them. The ASI account doesn't close. If you want to keep them enrolled in ASI on family-pay after Horizon's coverage ends, the school is already in place. No re-enrollment, no transcript transfer, no academic interruption. A few of our teens have stayed enrolled with Advantages after leaving Horizon and continued all the way to earning their high school diploma.

What You're Actually Getting (And What It Would Cost Elsewhere)

If you tried to assemble what we provide privately during a five-to-seven-month treatment arc, the numbers a family would face on the open market look like this:

What's included in your teen's education program

  • Accredited online K–12 private school tuition (Cognia, NCAA-approved) for 5–7 months - $2,500
  • On-site certified education professional leading academics, ~4 hours/day, 5 days/week, ~26 weeks - $31,200
  • Additional staff support during the academic block, ~3 hours/day, 5 days/week, ~26 weeks - $9,750
  • Educational case management, credit tracking, transcript planning, re-entry coordination - $5,200
  • Laptop and academic equipment provided during your kid's stay - $500
  • Continuous coverage that does not stop when residential ends - included
  • Portable enrollment that stays with your kid after our coverage ends - included

About IEPs and 504s

If your teen has an active IEP or 504 plan, here's what we do and what we don't.

  • What we do: support accommodations within the academic block, work at your teen's pace through ASI's individualized platform, and coordinate informally with you about what is and isn't working.

  • What we don't currently do: formally manage IEP paperwork, attend district IEP meetings, or take primary responsibility for coordinating with your home district's special-education team.

If your teen has a complex IEP that needs active case management during treatment, tell us up front. We'll talk through whether the right answer is for you to keep that piece moving with your district directly while we handle the day-to-day academic work, or whether pulling in an outside educational consultant makes more sense.

What You Can Count On

  • Tuition is paid for through residential, PHP, and IOP.
  • The ASI enrollment belongs to your teen. If treatment ends earlier than planned for any reason, the school doesn't disappear with it.
  • Credits travel. Cognia accreditation means the transcript is accepted by U.S. colleges and universities.
  • There is no re-entry transition. ASI continues with your teen when they step down. The school we enrolled them in is the school they stay enrolled in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this real school or just tutoring?

Real school. Horizon partners with Advantages School International (ASI), a fully accredited K–12 online private school with Cognia accreditation and NCAA approval. Credits are issued by ASI and accepted by U.S. colleges and universities nationally. The academic block is led by a dedicated Arizona-certified education professional.

Will my teen's credits transfer when they leave?

Yes. Cognia is the largest accrediting organization in the country. Transcripts from an ASI-enrolled student are recognized by colleges and universities across the U.S. Your teen is enrolled in an accredited school.

What if my teen was failing or refusing school before they came in?

ASI's catalog includes credit recovery and individualized pacing. The academic block is led by a certified educator who works with your teen where they are, not where they're supposed to be. Many teens who came in having completely checked out of school reengage once the pressure is off and the work is structured around their clinical schedule.

What happens to school when residential ends?

Nothing changes. The ASI enrollment continues through PHP and IOP. Horizon pays the tuition the entire time. When our coverage ends, the account stays open. If you want to continue on family-pay, no re-enrollment is required.

Do I need to do anything to set this up?

No. Horizon handles enrollment, staffing, equipment, credit tracking, and coordination. The laptop is provided. Families do not pay tuition. The one thing we ask: if your teen has an active IEP, flag it upfront so we can have a direct conversation about how to handle it.
