What is Depression?

Before we answer the question, “Is a messy room a sign of depression?”, let’s talk about depression. Depression is a mental health disorder that can be cured, although some people live with a form of it for years or decades. In both cases, attending therapy and taking prescription medications helps ease their symptoms and make life more enjoyable.

Common signs of depression include crying jags, sadness, hopelessness, a lack of interest in social life, doing poorly in school, and using drugs or alcohol to feel better.

Is a messy room a sign of depression?

For some teens, it’s just a problem, but not a sign of a mental health disorder. For others, living in chaos is a big sign that they are suffering emotionally.

Some teenagers with depression feel zero energy or drive, and the idea of exerting the energy to clean their rooms feels impossible. They may also deal with low self-esteem as part of their depression and not feel they deserve a tidy room.

Another symptom of depression is a lack of interest in personal hygiene. This can pertain not only to the person not showering often, but can also include a room that looks like a hurricane blew through it. Finally, cognitive difficulties can become compromised, making it difficult for the person to feel organized enough to do a good job cleaning.

Does Having a Messy Room Contribute to the Depression Cycle?

Living in a chaotic environment, including a really messy room, can fan the flames of depression.

A clean, organized room helps people feel more in control and less overwhelmed. Clean (or close to it) rooms help minimize depression, and easing depression through treatment makes a teenager feel more interested in living in a tidy environment.

What Can Cause Depression in Teenagers?

Adolescence is a particularly challenging part of life. Young people with no adult experience deal with issues like getting good grades, making friends, cliques, their changing bodies, their place in the family, and planning for their adult lives.

Any one or a combination of these can cause an adolescent to begin to feel depressed and want to shelter away from their problems.

A teenager can also become depressed because of going through a traumatic event, even going back to an adverse childhood experience. As well, genetics can play a part because when one family member has a mental illness like depression, it increases the chance that others will develop it.

Ways to Encourage Your Teenager to Clean Their Room

Even if a messy room is a sign of depression, parents can still encourage their children to clean it up.

Instead of fighting over it, they can try ideas like setting a timer for a set amount of time, like an hour, and the teenager cleans their room for that long.

Other family members can also clean other areas of the house at the same time. Parents can also offer to help clean and start by tackling one area of the room, such as the floor, surface tops, or the closet.

Additionally, ask your teenager to make a playlist for cleaning of 10 or 12 songs and then clean until the music is over.

How is Depression Treated?

Treatment for depression in teenagers includes exposing them to different types of therapy to help arm them with several ways to develop healthy coping skills and feel better. Common therapies used include:

What Happens if Depression in a Teenager is Left Untreated?

A teenager who is depressed and does not enter a treatment program usually finds that their symptoms may worsen.

Teens can become adults who are depressed, and it can change the entire trajectory of their lives. As well, untreated depression can lead to suicidal feelings.
