Family Therapy

Comprehensive Family Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health Recovery

Family bonds are often tested by substance use disorder and mental health disorders. When a young family member is grappling with mental health or substance use issues, it affects not just the individual but the entire family unit.

At Horizon Recovery, we recognize this intricate dynamic. Our specialized family therapy services aim to rebuild and strengthen the family bond, ensuring that every member feels heard, understood, and equipped to navigate the path to recovery together.

Our Family Therapy Approach to Addiction
and Mental Health Recovery

Inclusivity and Engagement

We believe that healing is a collective journey. By actively involving every family member, we create an environment where each voice matters, leading to comprehensive solutions that cater to the holistic well-being of the family.

Addressing Underlying Dynamics

Our expert therapists delve deep to uncover and address the underlying dynamics that may be contributing to an adolescent’s struggles, ensuring that the root causes are addressed for lasting positive change.

Equipping with Tools and Strategies

We don’t just focus on the problems; we empower families with the necessary tools and coping strategies to handle challenges, fostering resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

Why Family Therapy is Important for Addiction and Mental Health Disorders

Our group therapy sessions are not just about verbal sharing.
We incorporate holistic practices that cater to the mind, body, and soul:

  • Shared Understanding
Family therapy provides a platform for open communication, helping members understand the struggles their loved one is facing, leading to a more empathetic and supportive environment.
  • Collective Growth
As every family member engages in the therapy process, they learn, evolve, and grow together, ensuring that the family bond strengthens with every session.
  • Conflict Resolution
By addressing and resolving deep-seated conflicts in a structured environment, Family Therapy promotes harmony and reduces friction within the family unit.

Teen Mental Health Treatment With Family Involvement

We recognize that when a daughter or son is struggling with depression, substance use, or another mental health challenge, the entire family is affected. We also believe the family should be part of the healing and recovery process whenever possible.

Recovery is really about growth and healing. When a teen struggles with depression or addiction they eventually reach an impasse where nothing seems to change the way they feel. Being ‘stuck’, soon despair sets in. This may manifest as anger and ‘acting out’ or they may turn inward and become more depressed.

At the same time, the addicted or depressed teen pulls away from family. Their loved ones can see they are hurt and suffering, but feel powerless to help. Their relationship with family can begin to suffer. The teen is stuck, feeling that no one really understands what they are experiencing, yet without the tools to communicate what they are feeling, much less find their way out.

Because Families Recover Together

When family is a part of the treatment process they gain a better understanding of addiction or the mental health disorder. They begin to see order where before there was only chaos. The solutions to problems begin to come into focus.

We encourage family involvement for some very good reasons, but the bottom line is it improves outcomes. When the family is connected to the recovery process, both the patient and the family benefit.

When families participate in treatment and recovery…

  • The teen receiving treatment feels seen and supported.
  • Family members feel seen and their feelings validated.
  • The family gains a greater understanding of the mental health disorder or addiction.
  • Family members feel less helpless and understand they can be part of the solution.
  • Family members often learn more about themselves and begin their own recovery.

Integrating Evidence-Based Family Therapies

Our Family therapy sessions seamlessly integrate proven therapeutic techniques, ensuring families receive the best care possible:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): By addressing negative thought patterns and behaviors, CBT helps families cultivate a more positive and constructive outlook.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This approach focuses on acceptance and change, guiding families in managing their emotions and improving relationships.

Elements of Our Family Therapy Sessions

Collaborative Discussions: Guided by our seasoned therapists, these discussions create a space for open dialogue, ensuring every member feels valued.

Skill-building Workshops: From effective communication to conflict resolution, families are taught essential skills that benefit their daily interactions.

Activity-Based Engagements: We incorporate activities that foster teamwork and unity, from creative arts to group exercises, reinforcing the importance of collective effort

Committed Mental Health Care for Teens and Their Families

From the first time you call us, you will feel support and genuine empathy. We do this work because we are called to it. Most of our families have been touched by mental health disorders or addiction too.

We understand the healing journey – that’s why we’ve dedicated our lives to helping teens and their families overcome mental health challenges like depression and addiction. We’ve been there and we know the way forward.

We go the extra mile to support families right from their initial contact with us. Small gestures, such as a comprehensive welcome packet that explains what to expect during residential treatment, go a long way in making families feel at ease.

Moreover, as a pioneering step in our industry, we’ve introduced a dedicated Family Liaison whose sole responsibility is to proactively communicate with families daily as their loved ones progress through treatment.

About Our Family Program

  • Family therapy sessions will be offered after our clinical team makes a determination of when the most effective time will be. Oftentimes the adolescent needs some time to work through some things before the family is brought into the therapy.
  • Our Family Liaison will keep families updated as to the progression and best timing for scheduling a family therapy session.
  • Family therapy session frequency and content will be guided by our experienced therapists.

Family Liaisons

During the intake process, families will be introduced to our Family Liaison. Their role is to guide families through the entire journey, from explaining the process and addressing questions to providing support during a resident’s stay at Horizon Recovery.

Furthermore, the Family Liaison will assist in preparing families and residents for graduation, ensuring a smooth transition for the healing journey ahead.

At Horizon Recovery, we believe that transparency and support are paramount in the care and treatment of your child.

Our dedicated Family Liaison is here to ensure you’re always in the loop, easing the burden of uncertainty and allowing you to focus on what matters most—your child’s well-being.

The Difference at Horizon Recovery

Our approach to mental health and substance abuse treatment for teens and adolescents is a bit different than what you may have seen before. While we focus on clinical excellence and employ proven, evidence-based treatment modalities here, we never lose sight of heart and soul. Recovery is about more than just medical science and psychotherapy, after all.

Teens struggling with depression or addiction are often in crisis. Being a teenager is tough already. You’re struggling to find your identity and understand your place in the world. Your hormones are surging, emotions run high. You’re experiencing new feelings and facing challenges you’ve never faced before. When depression, anxiety or substance use disorders enter that equation too, it can be a recipe for chaos.

In our view, every teen we treat needs to feel seen, heard, and understood. Our mission is not only to help them overcome their substance use disorder and learn to manage their mental health. It is also to empower and inspire them. We treat and heal at Horizon Recovery, but we also engage and educate. Every teen we treat gains a greater understanding of their condition and symptoms, but they also get practical tools for managing their emotions and making better decisions.
